Olafur Eliasson's Land Art Installation on Cumbria Coast
In summer 2023, the Copeland Borough Council launches Deep Time: Commissions for the Lake District Coast, a landscape art series on the UNESCO-protected Cumbria coast in northwest England, where the Lake District National Park meets the Irish Sea. The program will unveil six site-specific works, including Olafur Eliasson's first permanent piece in the UK, created with writer Robert Macfarlane. Titled 'Your daylight destination,' the installation is a 30-meter elliptical steel pool on Silecroft Beach that interacts with tidal changes, appearing and disappearing twice daily. It features a viewing point with concentric rings inspired by prehistoric 'cup and ring' rock art. The project also includes commissioned texts and artist residencies supported by the university, aiming to boost tourism in the Copeland district, whose main town is Whitehaven. Eliasson, known for works on perception, recently exhibited at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence and Rivoli in Turin.
