Olafur Eliasson's Land Art and NFT Projects Question Environmental Justice

Olafur Eliasson is launching two innovative projects that delve into land art and NFTs. The first initiative, titled 'Your daylight destination,' will be situated in Cumbria, England's Copeland mud flats, as part of the Deep Time: Commissions for the Lake District Coast program. This installation features a steel basin that will be submerged by tidal movements, producing reflective rings, and is developed in collaboration with nature writer Robert Macfarlane. The second project, 'Your view matter,' is a virtual reality NFT commissioned by Vignesh Sundaresan and showcased at multiple locations. Both endeavors provoke discussions about environmental effects and social disparities. Deep Time receives funding from the UK's Coastal Communities Fund and Sellafield power station, while concerns about the ecological implications of NFTs arise amid Ethereum's transition to proof-of-stake. Critics contend that both projects contribute to material disruption without addressing underlying systemic problems.
