Olaf Breuning's Chaotic Spectacle at Chapelle du Genêteil
From July 3 to August 29, 2010, Olaf Breuning showcases his solo exhibition at Chapelle du Genêteil in Château-Gontier, where he merges themes of heavy metal, science fiction, and sexuality. The artist, originally from Switzerland and now based in New York (b. 1970), produces a variety of works, including installations, photographs, videos, and drawings featuring figures like vampires, ghosts, zombies, knights, and gorillas. Breuning eschews traditional discourse, claiming that historical interpretations differ. Influences from John Carpenter, John Waters, and Larry David are evident, as he employs cinematic techniques to craft a low-brow spectacle. His notable pieces, such as Vikings (2001) and Impossible Balance Act (2008), amplify grotesque elements, while the highlight, Can Someone Tell Us… (2010), presents mannequins inside cardboard boxes, using absurdity to provoke thought.
