institutional · 2026-05-04

Okwui Enwezor has stepped down from his role as artistic director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich due to health issues. He remarked, "There is no ideal time to leave, but I am resigning at a time when the Haus der Kunst is in a position of artistic strength." Enwezor, born in 1963 in Calabar, Nigeria, is recognized for his emphasis on contemporary art within historical and societal frameworks. He made history as the first non-European curator of documenta 11 in 2002 and has led the Haus der Kunst since 2011. Marion Kiechle, the Bavarian Culture Minister, commended his influence on the museum's global standing. Until a new director is appointed, chief curator Ulrich Wilmes and managing director Bernhard Spies will act as joint advisors.
