Okwui Enwezor's Documenta 11: A Platform Structure for Global Discourse

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Documenta 11, curated by Okwui Enwezor, introduced a groundbreaking platform structure that expanded the exhibition into a series of discursive events across four cities before culminating in Kassel. Enwezor, a poet, critic, and curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, conceived the platforms as a response to globalization and the instability of the nation-state. The first platform, 'Democracy Unrealized,' took place in Vienna and Berlin; the second in New Delhi; the third in St. Lucia focused on creolization; and the fourth in Lagos examined global cities. The final exhibition in Kassel ran from June 8 to September 15, 2002, across multiple venues. Enwezor emphasized that the platforms were diagnostic, not prognostic, aiming to create a network of intellectual communities rather than a single narrative. He distinguished anti-hegemonic strategies from anti-globalization, citing Édouard Glissant's concept of creolization. The exhibition featured artists such as Dieter Roth, Ivan Kozaric, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, and Constant's 'New Babylon.' Enwezor's team included Sarat Maharaj, Ute Meta Bauer, Octavio Zaya, Mark Nash, Suzanne Ghez, and Carlos Basualdo. The project also involved collectives like Sarai, Rocks Media Collective, and Black Film Collective. Enwezor stated that Documenta 11 inaugurated a new period for the institution, moving beyond the models of Arnold Bode and Harald Szeemann.
