Ogunquit Museum Mounts Major Carl Sprinchorn Retrospective

Next month, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) will unveil "Carl Sprinchorn: All the World is a Painting," marking the most extensive showcase of the Swedish-born American Modernist's creations to date. Co-curated by Devon Zimmerman from OMAA and scholar Donna Cassidy, this exhibition features pieces from collector Jay DeMartine and collaborates with Bates College Museum of Art (Samantha K. Sigmon). Sprinchorn (1887–1971), a gay immigrant who studied with Robert Henri, is often confined to the label of regionalist due to his Maine forest landscapes. However, the exhibition broadens this perspective, emphasizing his portrayals of Coney Island bathers, Dominican Republic forests, and the diverse workforce in Maine. It also explores labor themes during the Great Depression, presenting work as a political topic. Founded in 1953, OMAA is located on three acres of sculpture gardens along an oceanside cliff in Ogunquit, a renowned LGBTQ community. The exhibition will run from August 2026.
