OGA Transforms Challenging North London Site into Private Sanctuary

Architecture and interior design firm OGA, founded by Oliver Grimshaw and based in Berlin, has completed The Cottage Annexe, an infill project in Finsbury Park, North London. The site, located in the Stroud Green Conservation Area, was previously occupied by a modest two-storey cottage and one-storey outbuildings, and was considered undevelopable due to its awkward geometry and sensitive heritage context. OGA's solution incorporated the bulk of the site into the built envelope, refurbishing the existing cottage and adding a single-storey living space interspersed with two courtyards. The design preserves the Victorian streetscape by concealing the new structure behind a rebuilt garden wall, with a generous vestibule linking old and new. The living area features a signature circular window overlooking the central courtyard, and the courtyards bring light into the south-facing site without overlooking neighboring houses. Materials include London stock brick and zinc cladding, chosen for warmth and harmony with surroundings. Inside, bespoke cabinetry, subtle level changes, and exposed ceiling beams create a mid-century feel. The refurbished cottage now contains a bedroom, bathroom, and snug on the ground floor, with a primary suite upstairs.
