Officina82's StarsBOX: A Nomadic Shelter for Stargazing
Architects Lara Sappa and Fabio Revetria of Officina82 designed StarsBOX, a portable, open-source shelter that allows users to sleep under the stars without plastic or glass barriers. Inspired by the temporary shelters of nomadic shepherds in the Ligurian Alps, the structure is fully demountable, requires no fixed foundations, and leaves no trace. It can be configured by the user to either open completely to the sky or close for protection. The project includes the 'Costellazione StarsBOX,' a network connecting alpine refuges, organic cheese producers in southern Sardinia, Maremma winemakers, and Croatian farms. The architects emphasize a synthesis of ancient knowledge and contemporary design, drawing inspiration from writers like Biamonti, Calvino, Montale, De André, Giono, and Thoreau. They are collaborating with graphic designers, artists, writers, and poets to adapt the aesthetic and find new meanings. The project gained attention during the COVID-19 pandemic as a symbol of escape and reconnection with nature.
