Officina della Scultura Opens Sculptors' Studios to Public in Lombardy

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The second edition of Officina della Scultura, an initiative to open sculptors' studios and archives to the public, takes place in Lombardy on weekends of October 19-20 and 26-27, 2019. For the first time, visitors can access three studios of major 20th-century sculptors free of charge. On weekdays until October 31, the ateliers are open to school groups (bookings already fully booked) with workshops organized in synergy with ADMaiora. Marcella Cattaneo, heir of Piero Cattaneo and project director of the Associazione Piero Cattaneo in Bergamo, explains: 'The archive is a place for scholars. Officina della Scultura was born from the desire to preserve and disseminate the value of these spaces, often known only to insiders and invisible to others. Schools have shown a boom in bookings; students have the opportunity to touch the materials artists worked with, such as clays and bronzes.' The initiative also aims to map and create a network of all studios, archives, and workshops of sculptors who shaped the region's history. On October 19-20, in Bergamo at via Silvio Pellico 20, visitors can see the home-studio of Piero Cattaneo (1929-2003), known for his bronze and stainless steel sculptures. On October 26-27, in Milan at via Baldinucci 60, the studio of Kengiro Azuma (1926-2016) opens, together with his children Ambrogio and Mami. Azuma, a Japanese sculptor who was an assistant to Marino Marini, explored the inevitability of opposites. The article is by Lucia Grassiccia.
