A remote off-grid home in Lone Pine, California, designed by architect Linda Taalman, has been listed for $1.7 million. The 1,400-square-foot residence sits on 2.4 acres of land that was once part of the Merrell-Wolff Ranch, founded by transcendental mystic Franklin Merrell-Wolff in the 1900s. Karen Rathburn received the property as a gift from her father, who had been a caretaker of the ranch. She and her husband Gary, a general contractor who worked on Richard Neutra's Levit House, collaborated with Taalman to build the home, completed in 2020. Taalman is known for prefab, off-grid homes with industrial materials and sustainable features. The house features a 16-foot black granite island, a turquoise backsplash, sliding glass walls, a west-facing deck, and a sunroom. It includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a detached three-car garage with additional 1,000 square feet of flexible space, and off-grid systems like solar panels and a propane generator.
