cultural-heritage · 2026-04-20

A Russian air attack on Odessa late on Sunday 5 November damaged the Odessa National Art Museum, wounding eight people and hitting about 20 multi-storey buildings and dozens of cars. The museum, a Unesco World Heritage Site, was struck just before its 124th anniversary. Seven exhibitions, most featuring contemporary Ukrainian artists, were damaged, with videos showing a crater in front of the building, shattered windows, and ruined exhibition halls. The museum's collection of over 12,000 works had been transported for safekeeping by employees in February 2022. Odesa region governor Oleh Kiper stated on social media that most of the collection had been removed and that canvases and paintings from the current exhibition were not damaged.
