Octogenarian Artists Take Center Stage at Frieze New York 2026

festival-fair · 2026-05-06

Frieze New York 2026 highlights artists achieving late-career recognition, including Virginia Jaramillo (87), Antoni Miralda (83), Akinsanya Kambon (80), and Sara Flores (76). Jaramillo, a Mexican American artist from El Paso, presents her Point Omega series—smaller-scale abstract canvases inspired by 1970s sketches—with Hales Gallery and Pace. Her first solo museum show was at the Menil Collection in 2020. Miralda, shown by Galerie Champ Lacombe in the Focus section, revisits his Honeymoon Project (1986-1992) with drawings and memorabilia, including a 280ft wedding dress for the Statue of Liberty and a Christopher Columbus monument. Kambon, represented by Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Ortuzar, debuts raku-fired sculptures; his career survey Akinsanya Kambon: Soul Sessions opens May 28 at SculptureCenter and the Center for Art, Research and Alliances. Flores, the first Indigenous Peruvian at the Venice Biennale, shows a Kené-pattern canvas with White Cube ahead of her June exhibition in New York. The fair runs May 13-17.
