October Files Volume on Bruce Nauman Published by MIT Press

publication · 2026-04-27

MIT Press has just released a new edition of the October Files series that dives into the work of Bruce Nauman, who was born in Fort Wayne in 1941. Taylor Walsh curated this edition, which includes essays from thirteen prominent critics and scholars, such as Kathryn Chiong and Rosalind Krauss. The collection examines Nauman's art through semiotic and political lenses, covering his work from the mid-1960s to now. Walsh notes the influence of Wittgenstein and Beckett on Nauman's early neon pieces, particularly the 1967 work "The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths." Krauss also explores how Nauman's 1970 "Live-Taped Video Corridor" transforms perceptions of urban space. The book touches on Nauman's latest show, "Disappearing Acts," which recently transitioned from Schaulager in Basel to MoMA PS1 in New York, with Walsh's involvement in its curation. You can grab a copy for $21.95 (ISBN 9780262038362) in English.
