OBR's La Piazza del Vento Opens in Genoa

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Architecture firm OBR, founded by Paolo Brescia and Tommaso Principi, has inaugurated 'La Piazza del Vento,' a multisensory installation on Genoa's Waterfront di Levante. The project, which opened in September 2017 alongside the 57th Salone Nautico, spans 500 square meters and features 57 masts made of red cedar wood and white steel, donated by Capoferri. Each mast stands 12 meters tall, connected by textile rigging with Dacron flags and topped with wind vanes sewn from colored spinnaker fabrics that react to wind direction and intensity. Swings are placed among the masts to encourage lingering and observation of the sea and city. The installation includes two artistic contributions: 'Melodie Mediterranee,' a sound installation by architects Margherita Del Grosso (Enter Studio) and Matteo Orlandi with musical consultation by Roberto Pugliese, featuring 19 brass pipes tuned to a 'Mediterranean' scale that chime in the wind; and 'A.mare,' a performance by poet and street artist Ivan Tresoldi (Artkademy) combining anamorphosis and poetry. Genoa's mayor stated the work aligns with the city's vision for the Waterfront di Levante. The project was strongly supported by Ucina Confindustria Nautica with support from Spim.
