Objects of Memory at the 58th Venice Biennale
The 58th Venice Biennale, titled "May You Live In Interesting Times" and curated by Ralph Rugoff, features works that use found objects to address global trauma and memory. Christoph Büchel's "Barca Nostra" (2018-19) is the wreck of a migrant boat that sank in 2015, killing about 1,000 people, displayed at the Arsenale. Teresa Margolles' "Muro Ciudad Juárez" (2010), a bullet-riddled concrete wall from a school in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, is shown in the Central Pavilion. Lee Bul's "Aubade V" (2019) uses metal from dismantled guard posts in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to create a tower-lighthouse with LED messages. Augustas Serapinas' "Vygintas, Kirilas & Semionovas" (2018) incorporates souvenirs from the decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in Visaginas, Lithuania, and was installed by three local children. The Biennale runs from May to November 2019 across the Arsenale and Giardini venues.
