Obamas' Higher Ground Production Company Goes Independent After Netflix Partnership Ends

Higher Ground, the production firm established by Barack and Michelle Obama, is set to operate independently after an eight-year exclusive collaboration with Netflix. This development was revealed at an event in Philadelphia marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, where both Obamas engaged in separate discussions about their media endeavors. Their partnership with Netflix commenced in 2018 and was renewed in 2024 with a multiyear first-look deal. Significant projects from Higher Ground include the Oscar-nominated films 'Rustin', 'American Symphony', and 'Crip Camp', as well as the Oscar-winning 'American Factory', Will Forte's 'Bodkin', and Sam Esmail's 'Leave the World Behind'. Recently, they have also started new initiatives outside Netflix, such as HBO's 'Life Larry' and 'The Pursuit of Unhappiness', debuting in June. The Philadelphia event saw the attendance of notable figures like Joe and Dr. Jill Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and many others.
