Ō/Tempo di Festival: Marie Antoinette Spectacle at Palazzo Altemps

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

On January 29, 2020, Palazzo Altemps in Rome hosted the premiere of "Marie Antoinette: Donna, Regina e Mito," a theatrical piece created for the Museo Nazionale Romano as part of the Ō/Tempo di Festival. Directed and written by Cristiano Leone, with historical reconstruction by Filippo Davoni and starring Isabella Carloni, the play explores the last days of Marie Antoinette. The festival, directed by Leone and produced by Electa, features 32 multidisciplinary events across Museo Nazionale Romano venues (Palazzo Altemps, Terme di Diocleziano, Planetario) until June 24, 2020. The production incorporates contemporary elements, such as Billie Eilish's "When the party's over" for the queen's exit, and a perfume installation "Fiori di Versailles" by Francis Kurkdjian. Music by Edoardo Pietrogrande includes works by Gluck, Lully, and Rousseau. The play examines Marie Antoinette's trial and her enduring myth, drawing parallels to modern online harassment. Leone notes that the queen's story reflects cyclical archetypes and warns against the dangers of mob mentality.
