NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery presents 'Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial' through April 2025

NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery is hosting 'Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial,' an exhibition exploring memory, landscape, and shared identity through contemporary Gulf artists. The show features Sophia Al-Maria's 'Breakers' (2022), illuminated fiberglass sculptures modeled after concrete tetrapods used in 1970s-1980s Qatar coastal development. Mohammad AlFaraj presents thermal imaging works from Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, including 'The Sun Matches the Heat in my Heart' (2019/2024) and video 'HEAT' (2019/2024). Sarah Brahim's dual-channel video 'The Second Sound of Echo' (2023) features her father striking rocks in rhythmic dialogue. Faissal El-Malak's 'The Lizard of my Dream' (2023) incorporates Palestinian folk song 'Zareef Al Toul' addressing displacement. Bu Yousuf's 'My Wife' (2019) creates 'The Kingdom of Jannah' with vinyl wallpaper and instructional posters. Hazem Harb's 'Gauze' (2023) series uses fabric from Gaza, Palestine, arranged in sequential forms. Ayman Zedani's 'The Ancient Ones' (2023) features three-channel video documentation of 1,400-year-old trees surviving Jabal Ghulamah's 2020 wildfires. Aziz Motawa's 'Outfall' (2022/2024) blends industrial and natural elements with photo paper installations. The exhibition runs until April 20, 2025, presenting a humid atmosphere that evokes the Gulf region's ambiguous ecosystems.
