NYCxDESIGN 2026 navigates post-ICFF landscape with distributed districts and design installations
NYCxDESIGN 2026, New York's annual design festival, took place May 14-20, 2026, without its traditional anchor ICFF, which moved to November. The festival responded by emphasizing neighborhood design districts in Dumbo, SoHo, NoMad, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. Highlights included Future Now, a one-day summit with Cornell Tech on AI in design; a Lexus design pavilion at Times Square; a keynote conversation between Santiago Calatrava and Gabriel Calatrava at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church & National Shrine; and the second edition of Afternoon Light at the WSA building, featuring over 75 brands including Carl Hansen and Søn, USM, and Humanscale. Notable installations included IKONstudio and Rarify's 'New Icons' with the SOM79 chair by Charles Pfister; Simon Hamui Studio's 'Proximity and Interaction as a Spatial Practice' at K'AB JUUN gallery; Food Form Function by Pinch Food Design and USM; Camille Okhio's 'Eden' for Vitra inspired by Verner Panton; and Blu Dot's 'FieldTrip' photography series in Minneapolis. The festival also featured studio hops, night walks, and open studios. Conversations among attendees repeatedly touched on whether design can address global problems and the search for a defining design movement, with younger designers seeking hope and veterans seeking legacy.
