NXTHVN Fellowship Show at Sean Kelly Explores Reclamation

exhibition · 2026-04-24

Sean Kelly, New York presents 'RECLAMATION', an exhibition featuring the fourth fellowship cohort of NXTHVN, the arts incubator cofounded by Titus Kaphar in 2018. Located in New Haven's Dixwell neighborhood, NXTHVN supports emerging artists and curators of colour. Curated by fellows Cornelia Stokes and Kiara Cristina Ventura, the show includes painting, mixed media, sculpture, installation, and video by six studio fellows. Artists examine how cultural, art historical, and religious icons can be remade and reclaimed. Capt. James Stovall V reimagines biblical narratives with contemporary symbols; Ashanté Kindle celebrates Black hair through lush abstractions; Edgar Serrano critiques Picasso's appropriation of African and Oceanic forms; Donald Guevara explores digital diasporic imagery; Anindita Dutta addresses sexual trauma through sculptural assemblages; and Athena Quispe decolonizes painting by referencing Moche weavings and natural materials. The exhibition runs from 30 June to 11 August.
