Nvidia-Corning Deal Highlights China's Dominance in Global Fibre Supply for AI

ai-technology · 2026-05-08

The collaboration between Nvidia and Corning aimed at replacing copper connections in future AI technologies has highlighted China's significant position in the worldwide optical fibre supply chain. Huatai Securities analyst Wang Xing notes that since the fourth quarter of 2025, both the volume and prices in the global optical fibre and cable sector have increased, with China benefiting from its comprehensive industrial system and cost efficiencies. In 2025, China produced 59% of the world's optical preforms, 57% of optical fibres, and 47% of optical cables, solidifying its status as the leading supplier. Major Chinese optical fibre companies, including Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock, Hengtong Optic-Electric, and Tongding Interconnection Information, have seen their shares rise over 200% year to date. Following the Nvidia-Corning announcement on Wednesday, China's optical fibre index, which monitors numerous suppliers, increased by more than 100% this year and rose over 8% in the subsequent week, as reported by DZH.
