Nuvolo's serigraphic revolution celebrated in Spoleto exhibition
Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto presents 'Spazion', a centenary exhibition dedicated to Nuvolo (Giorgio Ascani, 1926–2008), curated by Bruno Corà, Aldo Iori, and Paolo Ascani in collaboration with the Associazione Archivio Nuvolo. The show traces the artist's pioneering transformation of serigraphy from industrial technique into a unique pictorial medium. Born in Città di Castello, Nuvolo moved to Rome after WWII, engaging with Alberto Burri's circle. His career included exhibitions in prestigious galleries and teaching at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Perugia. Key works on view include the Serotipie (defined by Emilio Villa in 1958 as 'painting with the means of serigraphy'), the Scacchi (1953–1957) and Nuovi Scacchi (1990–2005) series, the Bianchi (1956–1958) and Bianchi Collages (1957–1964), Cuciti a macchina (1956–1963) using sewing techniques learned from his wife Liana Baracchi, and Daini (1959–1962) made with deerskin. Later cycles such as Aftermandelbrot (1989–1993), Genesi (1990–1994), Genesi Video (1993–1997), Oigroig (1965–1978), and Videogrammi (1976) explore digital and fractal themes inspired by Benoît Mandelbrot. The exhibition underscores Nuvolo's lifelong experimentation with form, matter, and spatial perception.
