Nuno Ramos Launches Multidisciplinary Project 'A Extinção é para Sempre' with Year-Long Flame at Sesc Avenida Paulista
A Zippo lighter ignited at Sesc Avenida Paulista will burn continuously for one year as the opening gesture of 'A Extinção é para Sempre,' a multilanguage project conceived by artist Nuno Ramos. Running from May 25, 2021, to May 25, 2022, the initiative comprises seven episodes developed through dialogues with collaborators including writer Noemi Jaffe, filmmaker Jorge Bodanzky, actress Edna de Cássia, choreographer Eduardo Fukushima, and director Antônio Araujo. The project, produced by Sesc São Paulo with support from the Goethe-Institut, seeks a poetic response to Brazil's political climate and the pandemic, framed by Ramos as a series of extinctions. Episodes include 'CHAMA,' a live-streamed memorial flame; 'Chão-Pão,' a performance with bread and tiles; a tableau vivant based on Goya's 'The Disasters of War'; 'Iracema Fala,' revisiting a 1970s film; a work on public monuments with Jaffe; 'Helióptero,' updating the Antigone myth; and a final play about extinction. The project is presented virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic.
