NUMA Projection System Transforms Elevator Cabins into Responsive Environments

NUMA is an immersive projection system that reimagines elevator cabins as responsive spatial interfaces. Developed by interaction designer and creative technologist Shimin Gu with team members Xuanchen Li and Yixuan Huang, the system addresses the typically functional nature of elevators by modifying spatial perception rather than physical structure. A ceiling-mounted projection unit combined with real-time spatial scanning automatically aligns content across varying cabin geometries, supporting retrofit installation without structural modifications. Visual sequences include slow-moving landscapes and abstract compositions projected in peripheral areas to create depth and continuity, reducing perceived enclosure. The system operates in two modes: minimal peripheral projection during standard use, and full-surface coverage during emergencies like prolonged stops or power interruptions. An integrated battery allows continued operation during power outages. Behavioral research involving 317 participants informed parameters like projection coverage, movement speed, and timing. NUMA functions as an infrastructural layer alongside mechanical elevator systems, adjusting environmental conditions based on user experience.
