NSK Collective's Retrospective at Halsey Gallery Showcases Laibachkunst and Irwin Works from 1984-1998
The Halsey Gallery at the College of Charleston hosted NSK: Retro-Spection from May 11 to June 9, 2001. Curated by Dr. Marian Mazzone, this exhibition showcased the Slovenian art collective NSK-Neue Slowenische Kunst, featuring pieces from Neil Rector's collection spanning 1984 to 1998, with a focus on Laibach and Irwin. Notable works from Laibachkunst included Red Thrower (1981), Kreuzschach (1971-1981), and MB 84 Memorandum (1984), reflecting retro-avant-garde styles. Irwin's Malevich Between Two Wars (1994) paid homage to Kazimir Malevich. During Charleston's Piccolo Spoleto festival, events from May 20-27 included a film screening, a performance, a reading, and a panel discussion, marking a significant U.S. presentation of NSK's politically charged art.
