NRW Proposes Ban on Trade of Holocaust Documents

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-30

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is pushing for a federal prohibition on the sale of items associated with Nazi victims after a scheduled auction in Neuss for November 2025 was called off. This auction was set to include more than 600 documents from the Nazi era, such as letters from concentration camps and a Star of David badge from Buchenwald. Following the cancellation, 460 items were sent to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation, supported by private donations. NRW's Minister Nathanael Liminski (CDU) remarked, 'Where remembrance becomes a commodity, dignity wavers.' Justice Minister Benjamin Limbach (Greens) expressed concerns about the current legal framework. A bill aimed at banning the trade of such items, with exceptions for museums and research, is slated for introduction on May 8.
