Notre-Dame Reconstruction Nears Completion, Reopening Set for December 2024

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will reopen on December 8, 2024, exactly one year from his statement. The reconstruction of the roof and spire began only in 2022 due to the pandemic and archaeological discoveries beneath the foundations. The spire is being rebuilt to the original 1859 design by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, using medieval carpentry techniques for the monumental roof beams. Macron's earlier push for a contemporary architectural gesture for the spire was abandoned after public protests. The restoration project has raised approximately 800 million euros, with major contributions from French billionaires and art collectors François Pinault (100 million euros) and Bernard Arnault (200 million euros). Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, the cathedral's rector, described Notre-Dame as 'the incarnation of a nation's soul.' Macron also announced a competition for six 'contemporary' stained-glass windows to mark the 21st century's contribution to the cathedral's identity, and plans for a Notre-Dame museum in the nearby Hôtel-Dieu on the Île de la Cité.
