Nothing's Design Team on Color Evolution and Product Strategy
Nothing's London-based design team, led by Global Design Director Adam Bates, has been expanding the company's color palette over the past 18 months, moving from its initial cyberpunk-inspired aesthetic to a softer, friendlier range. Associate Principal Design for Colour, Material and Finish Lucy Birley and Lead Industrial Designer Frank Lin discussed this evolution at the company's Kings Cross HQ. Recent launches include the Phone (4a), Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4b), Ear (3a) series, and CMF Clip Pro. Birley's role involves determining the appropriate amount of color, resulting in the pink Ear (3a) and new yellow shades. The design process involves extensive prototyping, with earbuds going through 50 to 100 prototypes. Color choices are influenced by various sources, including a Prada mascara from Selfridges, and are tested for consistency across physical and digital forms. The team balances transparency and abstraction, using stylized transparent backs to convey honesty and storytelling. The studio employs 3D printing to explore designs in detail. Birley, who previously worked in fashion, notes that color can create a bond with products and encourages longevity. Lin cites influences from Memphis, Bauhaus, and the lime green era of Apple. The team values tactility, as seen in the Headphone (1)'s physical controls. New products include Phone (4b) at £299, Headphone (a) at £149, Ear (3a) at £99, and CMF Clip Pro at £79.
