Not All Architecture’s Ironbark House Blends Utzon’s Additive Principles with Fire Resilience
Not All Architecture has completed the Ironbark House on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, a climate-resilient dwelling for a family of five that draws on Jørn Utzon’s theory of “additive architecture.” The home steps across Wadawurrung Country using heavy-timber cladding and modular, prefabricated structural bays, echoing Utzon’s Expansiva system. A weathered timber boardwalk leads to a glazed entryway, while the spatial layout separates private wings (adults to the east, children to the west) that converge into a central communal core with a daybed, steel hearth, and custom joinery. The open-plan living and dining areas open onto a deep timber deck. To address harsh coastal winds and intense sun, the staggered footprint creates sheltered courtyards acting as microclimate buffers. The exterior uses Class 1 ironbark timber cladding achieving a BAL 29 bushfire rating, supported by an exposed galvanized steel skeleton with custom demountable connections for long-term sustainability. The project is compared to Sonelo Architects’ Cascade House and Nick Kent Design’s Bondi House, both celebrating raw materiality and structural honesty. Further down the coast, JAK Architecture’s Barwon Heads House also exemplifies thoughtful timber interventions.
