Not All Architecture’s Ironbark House Blends Utzon’s Additive Principles with Fire Resilience

Not All Architecture has completed the Ironbark House on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, a climate-resilient dwelling for a family of five that draws on Jørn Utzon’s theory of “additive architecture.” The home steps across Wadawurrung Country using heavy-timber cladding and modular, prefabricated structural bays, echoing Utzon’s Expansiva system. A weathered timber boardwalk leads to a glazed entryway, while the spatial layout separates private wings (adults to the east, children to the west) that converge into a central communal core with a daybed, steel hearth, and custom joinery. The open-plan living and dining areas open onto a deep timber deck. To address harsh coastal winds and intense sun, the staggered footprint creates sheltered courtyards acting as microclimate buffers. The exterior uses Class 1 ironbark timber cladding achieving a BAL 29 bushfire rating, supported by an exposed galvanized steel skeleton with custom demountable connections for long-term sustainability. The project is compared to Sonelo Architects’ Cascade House and Nick Kent Design’s Bondi House, both celebrating raw materiality and structural honesty.
