Norwegian cabin Cabin Sande uses Viking boat-building techniques

architecture-design · 2026-05-22

Architect Reinhard Kropf of Helen & Hard designed Cabin Sande in Randaberg, southern Norway, drawing inspiration from Viking-era boat-building traditions. The 112 sq m cabin uses whole tree trunks with their roots to reinforce column-beam connections, mimicking the natural joinery of traditional timber boats. The structure integrates furniture and architectural functions such as shelves, sofas, benches, and stairs. Panoramic windows frame ocean views, while the roof echoes the surrounding topography. The base is made from locally sourced stone. The cabin is divided into two aisles flanking a central funnel-like space, with a kitchen and two working rooms. One workspace is half a level above the living room, with a bathroom underneath. The design aims to create an immersive, interconnected experience that changes with the seasons.
