Northumbria University student projects reimagine Lake District mill and more

Dezeen School Shows presents a selection of student projects from Northumbria University's School of Architecture and Built Environment, featuring proposals that address ecological, social, and heritage concerns. Among the projects is 'Edgeland' by Lauren Cunningham, which reimagines Millom's former industrial landscape in the Lake District as a convergence of ecology, heritage, and community, including a new interpretation centre and regenerative masterplan for RSPB Hodbarrow. Other projects include 'Beyond the Bottle' by Eve Capstick, a maritime repair and recycling hub in South Shields; 'Unpicking: MEA House' by Bernadette Renshaw, transforming a Grade II listed building into a textile reuse sanctuary; and 'Auter' by Chris Hemsley, a cultural performance space in Newcastle. The school's statement emphasizes responding to climate crisis and resource scarcity through situated, hands-on learning. The projects span various courses including BA (Hons) Architecture, Interior Architecture, and DA Architecture, with tutors such as Cameron McEwan, Tara Hipwood, and Paul Jones. The show is a partnership between Dezeen and Northumbria University.
