Norm Architects' Dan Bakstudio: A Single Douglas Fir Shelving System Defines Entire Bakery Interior
In Varberg, Sweden, Norm Architects has finalized the design of Dan Bakstudio, a bakery interior featuring a custom floor-to-ceiling shelving system made of Douglas fir that functions as walls, storage, display areas, and even houses ovens. This design integrates all necessary elements into a single architectural feature, creating a warm, rhythmic surface that organizes the narrow space, which has limited natural light. Seating niches along the street-facing side are framed by the shelving and glass, providing cozy glimpses into the bakery's activities. A locally sourced granite island, with a rough base and polished top, serves as a geological anchor. Lead architect Sofie Thorning, along with senior architect Lucille Gairin and architect Julia Johansson, oversaw the project, ensuring every detail, from custom furniture to woven chair seats, was specifically crafted for the space. The chosen materials—Douglas fir, coastal granite, and lime plaster—are intended to age beautifully over time.
