A new analysis by an arts consultant compares the scale of nonprofit and commercial cultural attendance in the US. Nonprofit live cultural attendance totals about 965 million per year, while commercial attendance reaches 1.37 billion. Museums dominate the nonprofit side with 850 million visits, while movies lead commercial attendance at 800 million tickets. Despite similar audience sizes, for-profit revenue is 16 times larger than nonprofit spending ($1.17 trillion vs. $73 billion). The disparity stems from monetization: Disney extracts $190 per park guest, an NFL game $150, while a museum visit averages $10. The piece argues that public subsidies flow heavily to commercial culture—$33 billion for stadiums, $25 billion annually in film tax credits—versus $965 million for the NEA and state arts agencies combined. It calls for reframing the nonprofit sector's value around participation rather than economic impact.
