Nonagenarian Artist Marilù Eustachio Opens Galleria Heimat in Rome

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Marilù Eustachio, a 90-year-old Italian painter born in Merano in 1934, has transformed her former studio in Rome's Trastevere district, steps from Piazza Trilussa, into a new art space called Galleria Heimat. The term 'Heimat' is a German word expressing nostalgia. The gallery is directed by the cultural association Archivio Marilù Eustachio and aims to foster intergenerational dialogue among artists while retaining a workshop-like, familial atmosphere. It will open on April 11, 2024, with the exhibition 'Marilù Eustachio. Tra figurazione e Astrazione' (Between Figuration and Abstraction), curated by Alberto Dambruoso. The show traces key themes in Eustachio's research through works spanning from the 1950s to the 2000s. Eustachio has been active since the early 1960s, participating in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Her works are held in the collections of Galleria Civica di Modena and Museion in Bolzano. Throughout her career, she connected with major artists such as Mario Schifano, Susan Sontag, Carla Accardi, Titina Maselli, and Renato Mambor, with whom she created collaborative works. She prioritized rigor and discipline over personal visibility, leading to what is now considered a 'rediscovery.' Her practice merges literary and figurative vocations, and she has also experimented with photography. Curator Alberto Dambruoso describes her works as arising from a calm gaze on the world, transforming everyday reality through delicate, poetic abstraction.
