Non-Extractive Architecture: Joseph Grima launches year-long project at V-A-C Foundation in Venice

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

At Palazzo delle Zattere in Venice, Joseph Grima, the previous creative director of Design Academy Eindhoven, alongside his studio Space Caviar, has introduced Non-Extractive Architecture, an initiative under the V-A-C Foundation. This project, which will span approximately one year, aims to convert the palazzo into a hub for research and experimentation, reevaluating the architect's responsibilities while confronting detrimental building methods. Activities include international residencies, workshops, conferences, and a public program, with updates shared on the walls. The first volume, titled 'Non-Extractive Architecture: On Designing without Depletion Vol.1', has been published, with a second volume in the works. The artistic group N55 has developed three vehicles for the initiative, promoting a new architectural model that interacts with Venice's lagoon ecosystem. Multidisciplinary collaboration is a key focus, engaging a range of specialists.
