Noldor Artist Residency Launches in Accra for Emerging African Artists

artist · 2026-04-27

Joseph Awuah-Darko, an entrepreneur, artist, philanthropist, and contemporary African art expert, has founded the Noldor Artist Residency in Accra, Ghana. The program targets emerging African artists who lack resources for materials or specialized training. Each autumn, one candidate is selected for a four-week residency, producing a body of work exhibited in the studio and later abroad through international gallery collaborations. The residency began in 2020 with Emmanuel Taku as the first artist, who uses newspaper and acrylic paint on fiberglass, plywood, and canvas. A selection of 10 works from the program is on view at Noldor's warehouse until January 17, 2021. The residency operates across two locations: the first three weeks in a studio converted from an industrial warehouse in Accra's port district, and the final week in a secluded studio in a residential area, offering psychological and creative mentoring. This unconventional format promotes holistic well-being alongside artistic practice. Deeply rooted in Ghanaian and African socio-cultural contexts, the program addresses the growing cultural industry's needs, bolstered by the positive reception of Ghana's national pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Noldor also incorporates a commercially aware curatorial approach, aiming to sustain artists' careers through market integration and foster an informed local collector base for African art.
