Nobuyoshi Araki's Photography Exhibition at Fondazione Bisazza, Vicenza

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Fondazione Bisazza in Vicenza presents 70 photographs by Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki (born 1940, Tokyo), spanning series such as Sentimental Journey, Kaori, Painting Flowers, and Suicide in Tokyo. Curated by Filippo Maggia, the exhibition includes 13 unpublished works from 2009 commissioned by the foundation, blending Japanese dark elegance with Bisazza mosaics. Araki's practice explores the tension between life and death, beauty and decay, through extreme female nudes, kinbaku bondage, flowers at their peak, and Tokyo cityscapes. The artist describes photography as 'stopping time' and 'murder,' echoing Roland Barthes' Camera Lucida. A video documents his performative sets where models are posed like dolls. The exhibition also features the 2013 series Love on the Left Eye, where the right side of each photograph is erased due to Araki's loss of sight in his right eye. Araki states, 'Art to be alive must be a mixture of sex and the sacred.'
