Nittardi Winery's 40-Year Tradition of Artist Wine Labels
The Nittardi winery in Chianti, Tuscany, has been commissioning artist-designed wine labels for 40 years, a tradition started in 1981 by owner Peter Femfert. Each year, a contemporary artist creates the label for the winery's flagship wine, Nittardi Chianti Classico. Past contributors include Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mimmo Paladino, and Hidetoshi Nagasawa. The 2021 label was designed by Chinese artist He Yunchang. The winery's connection to art dates back to the Renaissance, as the estate once belonged to Michelangelo Buonarroti, who used the property to produce wine for Pope Julius II. The current project continues this legacy by blending winemaking with contemporary art.
