Nintendo Switch 2 Announced: Release Date, Features, and Launch Games

digital · 2026-04-26

Nintendo has officially announced the Nintendo Switch 2, a successor to the 2017 Switch, during a Nintendo Direct livestream on YouTube. The console will be released on June 5, 2025. It features a larger 7.9-inch screen with higher resolution, 256GB of internal storage expandable via microSD Express, and redesigned detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers that can function as a mouse when detached. A new button enables audio chat via the built-in microphone and video chat with an attached camera, as well as screen sharing. Nintendo had previously been the only major console maker lacking such communication features. The console supports backward compatibility with most Nintendo Switch games, with paid upgrades available for titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond to enhance performance. Launch titles include Mario Kart World and The Duskbloods, a new game from FromSoftware, the developer of Dark Souls and Elden Ring, which will also be available on Switch 2. Additionally, Game Share allows users to play multiplayer games with others who do not own the game.
