Nino Migliori's 'Stragedia' Marks 40th Anniversary of Ustica Massacre in Bologna

exhibition · 2026-04-27

On June 27, 2020, marking the 40th anniversary of the Ustica tragedy, the former Church of San Mattia in Bologna unveiled 'Stragedia', an immersive exhibition by photographer Nino Migliori, curated by Lorenzo Balbi. This exhibition features 81 candlelit photographs of the DC-9 wreckage, each representing a victim, taken in 2007. The installation includes seven screens displaying audio-visual narratives, with video editing by Elide Blind and Simone Tacconelli, accompanied by music from Aurelio Zarrelli. Supported by various organizations, including the Municipality of Bologna and Fondazione MAST, the exhibition will be open until February 7, 2021. On the same day, Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione will stream the 25-minute documentary 'Ustica quaranta' at 20:00, showcasing students from Liceo Copernico. The Ustica disaster, which resulted in 81 fatalities, occurred on June 27, 1980, when Itavia Flight IH 870 crashed near Ustica. Christian Boltanski's installation at the Museo per la Memoria di Ustica also honors the victims with nine black boxes filled with personal items.
