Nine Must-See Works in Venice During the Biennale
During the 2019 Venice Biennale, several exhibitions across the city showcase significant works. At Gallerie dell'Accademia, 'Baselitz Academy' displays early drawings by Georg Baselitz inspired by Renaissance masters. Ca' Pesaro presents Arshile Gorky's 'Still Life with Skull' (1927-28), influenced by Cézanne, Matisse, and German Expressionism. On San Giorgio Island, a retrospective of Alberto Burri opens with 'Catrame' (1949), a small painting using oil, tar, and pumice. At Santa Maria della Visitazione, collector Walter Vanhaerents curates a dialogue between James Lee Byars' 'The Death of James Lee Byars' (1994) and Zad Moultaka's sound installation 'Vocal Shadows' (2019). Palazzo Cavanis hosts 'Pino Pascali – From Image to Form', featuring 'Botole ovvero Lavori in corso' (1968) after a decade-long restoration. Ca' Corner della Regina presents Jannis Kounellis' 'Tragedia Civile' (1975), part of a retrospective curated by Germano Celant. Palazzo Contarini Polignac displays Günther Förg's bronze masks from 1990 in 'Förg in Venice'. In San Fantin church, Dmitry Krymov's video inspired by Tintoretto's Last Supper is projected as part of 'There is a beginning in the end', alongside works by Gary Hill and Irina Nahkova.
