Nine Artists Who Transformed Wartime Experience Into Enduring Artworks
During World War I, Otto Dix (1891–1969) served in the German military, creating The War (1929–1931), which illustrates soldiers and devastation. Louis-François Lejeune (1775–1848) painted The Battle of Borodino (1822) after experiencing the bloodiest day of the Napoleonic Wars, showcasing it at the Salon de Paris in 1824. David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896–1974) fought for the republicans in the Spanish Civil War and produced War (1939), currently housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Adriana Filippi (1909–1982) portrayed partisans' struggles in Grigioverdi adrift (1943). Mihailo Milovanović (1879–1941) created The Turks in Kumanovo (ca. 1912), while Kubota Beisen (1852–1906) depicted Victory in the Sino-Japanese War. Olive Mudie-Cooke (1890–1925) captured scenes in In an Ambulance (1919), and Alexandros Alexandrakis (1913–1968) painted Suddenly Dark. Urs Graf the Elder (ca. 1485–ca. 1527) produced an engraving of the Battle of Marignano (1521).
