Nina Katchadourian's 'Uncommon Denominator' at the Morgan Library

Nina Katchadourian's exhibition titled 'Uncommon Denominator' is currently displayed at The Morgan Library & Museum in New York, running until 28 May. This showcase, the third installment in a series of artist-curated exhibitions at the Morgan, features items from both the museum's collection and Katchadourian's archives, examining significant social themes through small curiosities. Among the works are 'Moss Maps' (1993) and 'Globe 1' (2019), which utilize press-on letters on moss and a stanchion pole top to explore geography and perception. Katchadourian, recognized for her airplane lavatory self-portraits (2010–), seeks to reveal the research behind her whimsical art. Highlights include a fragment of a champagne bottle from J. P. Morgan's yacht and a repaired plastic storage-box lid from her grandfather, paired with 'Renovated Mushroom (Tip-Top Tire Rubber Patch Kit)' (1998). The exhibition underscores visual connections that expose class and perspective differences, evoking an animistic essence akin to a wunderkammer.
