Nina Childress's 'Jazy, Hedy & Sissi' at La Halle des Bouchers
The Centre d’art contemporain La Halle des Bouchers in Vienne, France, hosted Nina Childress's first solo exhibition, 'Jazy, Hedy & Sissi,' from November 22, 2014, to January 25, 2015. The show featured recent works from 2010 and 2014, including the installation 'Le Triangle des Carpathes'—a set of three wooden modules with orifices for carnivalesque disguise, alongside oil-on-canvas abstractions evoking Sonia Delaunay's stage costumes and 2010s vector graphics. The titular triptych depicted athlete Michel Jazy, Empress Sissi, and actress Hedy Lamarr, continuing Childress's series 'Tombeau de Simone de Beauvoir' (2008-2009). The artist, a former singer of post-punk band Lucrate Milk, employs collage and reappropriation across styles from hyperrealism to abstraction, treating painting as both decor and costume. The exhibition's title plays on the confusion between Vienne, Austria (Sissi's birthplace) and Vienne, Isère (the venue).
