Nîmes Exhibition Spotlights Zagreb Avant-Garde from 1950s to Today
The exhibition 'Personal Cuts. Art à Zagreb de 1950 à nos jours' is currently on display at the Carré d'Art–Musée d'Art Contemporain in Nîmes, under the curation of Branka Stipančić. This showcase highlights avant-garde artists from Zagreb during the 1960s and 1970s, drawing inspiration from Fluxus and conceptual art. Notable contributors from the Gorgona group include Julije Knifer, Josip Vaništa, and Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos, whose legacies encompass typed reflections and photographs. The subsequent generation, represented by Goran Trbuljak and Vlado Martek, addressed themes of visibility and societal concerns. Works by Sanja Iveković challenge female representation, featuring a video on Yugoslav history. Post-war, there has been a resurgence of Western interest in their art, with contemporary artists like Igor Grubić and Božena Končić Badurina, alongside Dalibor Martinis, who connects the past with the present.
