Nilau: Marie Veyron's Responsible Ostrich Leather Luxury Goods Brand

Marie Veyron founded Nilau, a leather goods brand that transforms rare French ostrich leather into traceable, eco-responsible high-end pieces. The project originates from her family's ostrich farm, where raising ostriches has been legal in France only since the 1990s. With about thirty breeders nationwide, each producing 80 to 100 skins per year, the market remains small but underutilized. Veyron aims to maximize this material. The name Nilau is a wordplay combining "lin" (flax) reversed with the start of "autruche" (ostrich), evoking lightness and spring. Veyron trained closely with workshops, including an eight-month stint in a design office, and creates prototypes from wallpaper paper. Ostrich leather is soft, resistant, and recognizable by its quill bumps (picots), which require careful handling in tanning and assembly to preserve. The leather patinas over time without cracking. Veyron uses different parts of the skin—the crowned back and smoother sides—and designs in dialogue with material, demand, and end use. Beyond her own collections, Nilau offers custom pieces for individuals, collaborations with other brands, and decoration and architecture projects. Ecological commitment drives choices: co-product materials, skin optimization, short supply chains, and eco-design to avoid waste. Veyron sees Nilau as both a human adventure and a creative project to showcase the possibilities of ostrich leather.
