Nil Yalter and Anna Maria Maiolino Win Golden Lion at Venice Biennale

award · 2026-04-22

At the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Nil Yalter and Anna Maria Maiolino have been honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The awards ceremony will take place on April 20, 2024, aligning with the opening of the Biennale. Curator Adriano Pedrosa pointed out the importance of this decision, as it reflects the event's theme focusing on artists who have moved between different regions, particularly North and South, and across Europe. Both Yalter and Maiolino are distinguished migrant women artists who embody the theme 'Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere.' The Biennale will explore the idea of those marginalized by various identities. Yalter will present 'Exile is a hard job' (1974) and 'Topak Ev,' while Maiolino will reveal a new large-scale clay-inspired work. The event runs from April 20 to November 24, 2024.
