Nikon Releases Firmware Updates for Discontinued D6 and D780 DSLRs

Nikon has issued new firmware updates for its final two DSLR models, the D6 and D780, despite both cameras being discontinued and over six years old. The D6 received firmware version 1.71, arriving one year and one day after version 1.70, fixing an issue with occasional underexposure when using Nikon D-type (AF-D) lenses and a problem that incorrectly imposed a 1/250s shutter speed limit during high-speed sync with speedlights. The D780, updated to version 1.21, addresses underexposure that occurred when changing the focal length of a zoom lens during high-speed continuous burst photography. Both cameras were launched in 2020, and their previous updates were released on August 5, 2025. Nikon's continued support for legacy DSLRs is notable as the company focuses on its Z mirrorless system.
