Nikolaus Gansterer's Drawing as Thinking in Action at Drawing Lab Paris

Austrian artist and performer Nikolaus Gansterer presents "Untertagüberbau" at Drawing Lab Paris, a 16-minute HD video installation originally composed of three screens, now showing a single autonomous screen. The work, dated 2017, features a fixed overhead shot of a blackboard where Gansterer's hand draws with chalk, charcoal, and pencil, incorporating found objects, ink, tracing paper, chemical reactions, and insects. The video is a "translecture," transforming scientific radio broadcasts and YouTube lectures on black holes by mathematicians into a poetic visual language. Sound by Martin Siewert includes crickets, music, and rain. The piece explores the intersection of art, science, and philosophy, referencing Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas, Donna Haraway's theory of co-production, and Bruno Latour's actor-network theory. Gansterer's approach sees drawing as thinking in action, where meaning is both signified and felt. The exhibition, curated by Jeanette Pacher, runs from March 22 to June 15, 2019.
