Niko de La Faye's Kinetic Tricycle M2B to Debut at Dakar Biennale

artist · 2026-05-05

French artist Niko de La Faye (born 1978) has been traveling the world on a modified Chinese tricycle (sanlunche) since 2011 as part of his ongoing performance artwork M2B. The kinetic sculpture, which incorporates eight spheres representing Taoist trigrams and geometric solids referencing physicist Garrett Lisi's Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything, is designed to be a poetic interference in traffic. After completing the first leg from Beijing to Shanghai (1,600 km) in 2012, M2B traveled to Hong Kong for the HK Contemporary Art Fair and the Croisements festival. In 2014, it was invited to Paris for the 50th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations at YIA Contemporary Art Fair. In August 2016, it participated in NYC's Summer Streets program via the NYC Department of Transportation. The artist plans to take M2B to Africa for the DAK'ART Contemporary Art Biennale in Dakar (May-June), where it will be covered in white fabric for a light and shadow performance, collaborating with the Franco-Senegalese group Guiss Guiss Bou Bess. Once all continents (including Oceania) are visited, M2B will transform from a Mobile Urban Kinetic Sculpture (MUKS) into a Butterfly Effect Kinetic Sculpture (BEKS), a stationary installation inviting public interaction.
